When It Rains, It Pours…

If you can relate to this title, you probably feel like you don’t have time to read through some thought out reasoning for why you should try this or that.  So, I am here to provide you a quick and easy list of things to implement when life just keeps throwing your curve balls.

Keep your regular routine.

A reliable and stable schedule brings a sense of control to our lives.  In the midst of chaos, try your hardest to stick to your regular routine (if the situation allows).

Say No.

You are the only person who can truly be respectful of your time.  It is ok to say no to things. Don’t give in to the tendency to apologize or come up with some worthy excuse. No can mean no and that’s ok! Maybe try something like this:

“I am unable to commit anything else to my schedule right now.”

“Thank you for including me but I am unable to attend.”

Ask yourself “Can I do anything about this right now?”

When those curve balls keep coming, some of them are going be things you can take immediate action against. Some will be things you are completely powerless against.  Learn how to recognize the difference between the two so you can actively focus on the things you can actually change so that you don’t waste your energy.

Give yourself permission to survive.

Sometimes, when things are hard, we have the tendency to personify this image that we can handle it. All this does is negate how we are actually feeling.  Give yourself permission to enter survival mode. Wear the same outfit multiple times in a week to work and/or let TV be the parent for a few days. Cry if you need too.  Vent if you need too. Ask for what you need; which brings me to my next point.

Ask for and ACCEPT help.

Asking for help isn’t usually a problem for me. However, accepting that help is usually where I struggle.  When we are hurting and struggling, we are often times fighting off feeling hopeless or weak. Accepting help (especially from your “people”) does not mean you are either of these things.  It just means that you have people who are willing to invest in a meaningful relationship with you. Let them.
