How often do you use your phone or Google calendar to schedule meetings, appointments, hanging out with loved ones, etc? We stay on track of these time commitments because we prioritize them. In that same vein, when was the last time you scheduled time for yourself?
Self-care is important for a myriad of reasons. It can improve our energy levels, decrease stress, boost our immune system, increase productivity, benefit our relationships, and much more.
Self-care for energy
Taking a day or weekend to sleep in and relax is vital for your strength and energy. Other self-care ideas to improve energy include consuming more nutrient-dense foods/beverages, incorporating vitamins into your routine, stretching, and making time to breathe in the fresh air.
Self-care for stress management
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but luckily, self-care can allow us to be better equipped to handle all of the stressors thrown at us. To combat stress, you can engage in self-care by getting a massage, lighting a candle with a scent you love, drinking soothing tea, journaling, and spending time with people who lift you up.
Self-care for immunity
Our physical health and mental health are significantly intertwined with each other. Have you ever noticed that you are more prone to mild illnesses like colds when your stress levels are high? To decrease this risk, try taking care of yourself by drinking enough water, finding an exercise routine that feels right for you, and maintaining a sleep schedule that works best for you.
Self-care for productivity
When our minds, bodies, and souls are feeling taken care of, we are setting ourselves up for success. If you are struggling with being productive, setting attainable goals for the day/week, meditating to ground yourself, and creating an inspiring workspace are great self-care ideas to try.
Self-care for our loved ones
If you are struggling with the belief that self-care is selfish, I challenge you to think about the oxygen mask rule in airplanes. If the air pressure drops, you are instructed to put your mask on first before assisting others. This is because we are best able to take care of others when we take care of ourselves first. Engaging in the self-care ideas mentioned above can also help your relationships. Additionally, creating healthy boundaries is another great self-care idea to practice.
I will leave you with some final food for thought from this quote by Katrina Mayer. “Loving yourself isn’t vanity. It’s sanity.”
