Throwback Thursday
Did you have a social media account years ago? If yes, you are likely being reminded of some of the past events and posts. Apps, like TimeHop, had their debut before fizzling out. However, they were replaced by Facebook’s “On This Day” feature. Being only a click away from some of your old pictures and past experiences can bring up lots of emotions; one of them being a complex feeling of nostalgia.
Merriam-Webster defines nostalgia as, “a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition.” The sentiment is not always warm and fuzzy. In fact, nostalgia can also be heavily laced with sadness and regret which can lead to deeper emotions of hopelessness.
Your memories bring more sadness than joy if:
You’re not able to cope with seeing your spouse’s pictures with previous partners.
You only remember the sad or bad experiences that happened surrounding a picture.
You get stuck in a “should have, would have, could have” cycle.
A different approach to nostalgia
In the coming weeks, we will exam each of the circumstances and specific ways to combat aspects of nostalgia. Until then, it’s important to know that nostalgia and memories don’t always have to serve up negative emotions. We are reminded of the great people that supported us when we seek out nostalgia. Those people that were helpful during hard times. This creates a great sense of joy and be a great coping mechanism to recall these memories when we feel lonely. Furthermore, you can reflect on the times you had, how far you have come, and use the memories as a restorative time.
